Kamishibai

Storytelling

Kamishibai is a Storytelling artform from Japan. "Kami" means paper, "shibai" means theatre or stage. I discovered this beautifully engaging artform 10 years ago when attending a Storytelling Circle at RAW Community Garden in Brighton, Melbourne. I needed something to gently entertain Kindergarten children during rest time. As soon as I witnessed the magic of Kamishibai, I was hooked. I have been telling and creating Kamishibai stories ever since.

Oral
Storytelling

There is something unequivocally HUMAN about oral storytelling. We tell each other stories all the time, of course. And we listen to people's stories - whether they are told casually or more formally, we feel transformed and more connected. I have attended many storytelling sessions in the past and enjoyed how their cathartic effect has warmed my heart. Great Oral storytellers, apart from entertaining, know how to elicit empathy and true human connection. Over the years, I have endeavoured to refine my oral storytelling skills in Early Childhood settings and at community events.
